Just getting started on your rise to power? Our full tips guide below shows you how to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate on any difficulty level.

Even if you are a genre veteran, it's worth browsing through the tips below so you know exactly what structures and units to start with for the biggest advantage in the early game. Let's get started!

Build Happiness Structures Early

Before amassing a huge army, you need to make sure your citizens are content so they don't start a rebellion at home.

Here's the catch: population happiness automatically declines at a rapid pace by default. It does so until you build a structure that reverses the trend and increases happiness.

You don't want to get caught in a situation where production plummets and riots break out just as you need new armies to defend against strong enemy factions encroaching your borders.

In some missions and scenarios, you will automatically start with a ready-to-build Recreational Dome. You should build it on the first turn if possible. In other situations, you will need to research Frontier Facilities first in the Society research tree.

These are the three main options for increasing happiness in a colony, and where to research them:

  • Recreational Dome (Frontier Facilities)
  • Botanical Gardens (Environmental Conditioning)
  • Virtual Entertainment Plaza (Colonist Care)

After pumping out a happiness-increasing structure, your next order of business before upgrading anything is to quickly produce several low-level units so you can replenish your main army, defend your capital, and scout for undefended resources.

Don't Leave Cities Undefended

This is a bad idea. Don't do this.

In Planetfall, there is the constant temptation to pack your strongest hero full of units and stomp across the planet leaving a trail of destruction in your wake.

In the early game, it seems like you can easily overpower everything, so you'll want to amass as much territory as possible. Absolutely do not do that, even if it appears there are no enemy armies close enough to threaten your structures.

Other factions will take advantage of the fact that your strongest armies aren't at home, and you will quickly lose more territory than you gained.

In the early rounds, a single unit on a city will keep other factions away. As you start to hit turns in the mid double, however, you need to place full stacks with attached heroes as invaders will start trying to take your colonies.

While defending and upgrading your capital, don't forget to build colonizers in the unit production list so you can get new cities up and running for extra energy income and more military units.

Send Out A Scout To Pick Up Undefended Resources

While many of the resource nodes, caches, and various structures are defended by NPC armies, you can find undefended resources strewn across the far corners of any map.

To get an early edge, send out a single unit with high movement points to explore and pick up whatever is unattended.

Some factions have an early Strategic Operation available to summon a unit, which frees up your capital to build a happiness structure and other armies.

The Kir'ko, for instance, can summon a Whisper of Discord by researching Whispers and Visions on the Psynumbra branch of the Military tree. The Dvar can deploy Trenchers by researching Drudges on the top branch of the Military tree.

If that's not an option in your current scenario or you are playing a faction without an early summon, immediately produce a cheap scout unit with high movement or flying such as the Shrike (Amazons), Inspector (Assembly), or OWL (Vanguard).

Together with sending out an expendable scout, there's one change to how you play that is absolutely critical when establishing the edge against other players and getting ahead in the arms race: always set your research and unit production at the BEGINNING of the turn, before you start exploring.

You may get production and research boosts by taking over resource nodes or finding caches, which will effectively complete your production or research that same turn for free.

If you set your production at the end of the turn instead, you rob yourself of the ability to get instant completion and effectively put yourself behind in the race to expand.

Keep NPC Factions Happy

While you need a steady influx of energy, research, and production to keep pumping out higher-end units, influence can actually become the most important resource to manage.

Every map features one or more of the following NPC factions that operate independently of other AI players:

  • Autonom
  • Growth
  • Paragon
  • Psi-Fish
  • Spacers
Age Of Wonders: Planetfall

These factions aren't out to conquer the map, but they do own locations and will sell you units and mods as you increase your relationship by completing quests or offering tributes.

Here's why that's important: you can spend influence to buy high tier units without having to spend any energy or wait multiple turns for the creature to be produced. Units purchased with influence appear at your capital immediately, with no wait time, which can tip the balance in any battle.

For instance, when you reach the Friendship relationship level with the Psi-Fish, the Tier III elite Siren unit is available for only 80 influence, which is much cheaper and faster than producing an equivalent unit at one of your colonies.

Plan For Your Victory Path Early

While campaign missions have specific victory conditions based on the storyline, randomized maps are instead won through total conquest, unification, or destruction (euphemistically referred to as 'purification').

If you are going for either of the latter two options, you need to plan ahead, as both options must first be researched.

The Planetary Unification Protocol can be researched early by unlocking Dawn Of A New Union on the top Doctrine branch of the Society research tree. It takes longer to implement than the destruction option, however, and comes with these major restrictions:

  • Virtuous reputation required: This means you can't take resources and structures from other players, and you need to forge alliances and spend influence to compliment other factions
  • Cannot be at war with players or NPC factions
  • Need 3 dwellings under alliance control

To go this route, you need to play defensively and only expand where there are hostile marauder armies that don't belong to any faction.

Researching Planetary Purification takes far longer to initiate, as it's found at the very end of the military research tree, although it has no restrictions and is much easier to implement.

If you want to go this route, keep in mind that all resources are culled by 30% during the 10-turn countdown for purification, so plan accordingly, as you won't be able to build as many units while all of the other factions mass to annihilate you before you can wipe out life on the planet.

Emerge from the cosmic dark age of a fallen galactic empire to build a new future for your people. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is the new strategy game from Triumph Studios, creators of the critically acclaimed Age of Wonders series, bringing all the exciting tactical turn-based combat and in-depth empire building of its predecessors to space in an all-new, sci-fi setting.

Build your empire with one of six unique factions, ranging from the militant Vanguard to the dinosaur-riding Amazons and the cyborg-zombies of the Assembly. Progress through each faction’s missions using your wits, military strength and diplomacy, exploring planetary ruins and encountering other survivors as you unravel the history of a shattered civilization. Fight, build, negotiate and technologically advance your way to utopia in a deep single-player campaign, on random skirmish maps, and against friends in multiplayer.

Tips and Tricks for Beginners

-Keep units alive as best you can. Levels massively improve units, and prime ranks frequently provide insanely powerful upgrades to certain soldiers. In that vein, you want to manual combat as often as you can, quicksave before auto battles in case you want to redo losses.

-Mods are a massive part of what makes armies powerful. You want to start thinking about designs and “What do I want this guy to do?” pretty much from the research screen all the way to when they do their first fights. Try to create synergies. Pretty much any army wants access to some form of healing (Pay attention to whether the heal only affects soldiers or also machines). Most races have a set of basic mods that massively improve their initial units.

– Specialize Commanders. Does your hero lead a force, or is he a secondary that “just” fights? What kind of force does the Commander lead? Frontliners want to get their units resistances and more health and have an easier time taking advantage of AOE moves. Armies more focused on range care more about cover, Overwatch and hit chances.

– Always try to be expanding, and make a plan on which sectors you want to grab first. I generally start thinking about a second colony between turn 10 and 20. Keep in mind that you can annex neutral factions if you have enough influence. In that vein, do as many quests as you can for the rewards and reputation.

– Optimize your movement allowance. Plan where you want to walk, in which order. Split faster units off for scouting or collecting pick ups. Don’t send entire armies on “errands” to annex sectors or grab goodies. That’s what scouts are for. Generally clear everything you see for the xp and the loot.

– Once units are prime rank, excess xp on them is effectively wasted. Try to use them as Garrison forces and let fresh recruits do the frontline fighting. Generally only bring primes when you need them. You can split armies to optimize xp.

– Giving your starting Commander the Imperial APC starting loadout is one of the best and safest choices early on. You get access to a strong healing drone (Compensating for mistakes you might do) and the vehicle makes the commander itself tankier. Take Decadent and you basically have tank / healer in one package. Most early fights will barely threaten your hero.

– Exploitation research also comes with a movement bonus for select terrain. Running through a lot of forests? Grabbing the tech just for the movement is probably worth it.

– Get the Aquatic Exploration Tech at the beginning of the research tree early if there are lots of rivers around your starting location. Saves a ton of movement.

– Optimize Colonists jobs, particularly in the early game. Move them between food, production and research as necessary to shorten production times. For example, if you are building something that costs 200 production, and you are doing 80, see if you can shuffle workers to raise that to a 100. Means you complete it in 2 turns rather than 3. In cases where you are just short, keep in mind that you can “buy” 1 construction per turn per colony. So if you’re missing like 20 production to finish something, you can just pay 10-30 energy to finish it immediately.

– In combat, remember that you can hold down alt to target cover. Sometimes it’s worth more destroying somebodys cover instead of taking a 10% hitchance shot at them. Pay particular attention to effects that have the “demolisher” trait, as they can destroy cover that is normally indestructible. You can also use the “alt” key to target grenade aoe’s in a way where they hit more enemies. Particularly your first turn, when enemies are hanging back, can be used to just clear some cover that the enemy might use on the approach.

Age Of Wonders: Planetfall Review

– Pay attention to stagger and Overwatch. A melee unit hitting another melee unit can “waste” the majority of it’s turn. If an attack misses or grazes, the enemy will counterattack, staggering your unit in the process and taking off some of their action points.

Wonders

– Keep in mind that you can cancel Overwatch by staggering somebody first. Stagger, in general, is one of the best things to inflict and as a result, one of the best things to be immune against. Almost all grenade stagger, Mods frequently grant stagger on attacks. Heavy Units are immune against stagger by default.

– Debuffs on multiple attacks can change the damage numbers on follow ups. If your hero does kinetic damage, and has a chance to inflict bleed for example:

1 shot hits for 16, applies bleed. Bleed reduces defenses. The two shots after inflict 18 damage due to this.

– Damaging units does not reduce their damage output. Killing is much more important than wounding.
